3D Printing Miniatures and Custom Figurines: A Guide to Bringing Digital Models to Life

Most 3d printers are building parts using melted plastics similar to how a hot glue gun melts glue sticks. They build layer by layer into a solid object and can be built of various materials and in varying levels of quality.

There are also resin printers that are capable of much higher detail and which work slightly differently than the filament printers mentioned above.

No matter which printing style you prefer, or which best suits your needs, we are here to help in making your dream a reality.

How much does it cost?

Pricing varies greatly as something as simple as a custom name badge can be printed and something as large as a full-sized prototype car. So, as you can imagine, that can vary the price greatly. That said, we use a template for pricing that includes file prep time, material costs, printing time, electricity use, post-print clean-up, and maintenance on our machines based on the use per year. That all gets complicated. So, we try to keep things simple.

We are happy to provide a “per hour price” based on your prints if you prefer.

Resin printing is $15/hour.
Filament printing is $5/hour.

How long does it take?

That very much depends on your print size and complexity of your model. For FDM filament printers, we get about 45mm/second. That probably means absolutely nothing. So, it is best to have a file prepped and prepared (we can do this for you) for a more accurate quote.

For resin printing, we get approximately 1 inch per hour of build volume. There are a few additional details that are determined with supports and such. (A 3 inch tall figure might come out to 3.25 inches after supports, for example.) There is also a little bit more time in post-printing to clean up parts. Otherwise, this is the easiest to calculate. That said, not all items lend themselves to being easily printed in resin. It is best used for smaller, more detailed items.

Most items we try to que up and complete as soon as possible. When you place your order, we will be able to tell you where you are in que and will give you an approximate time of completion.

What all can you print?

The short answer is anything. In reality, we specialize in items that are smaller than 8.3″ x 8.3″ x 9.8″ for our FDM printers. This allows us to print in a single part. We also have resin printers that go up to 7.7″ x 4.8″ x 9.6″. Though larger sizes can certainly be achieved and we are always looking for excuses to purchase larger printers, we have currently maintained these size machines with a high level of success.

If we are not able to print it, we will find someone that can!
